If you’re not running video ads on Facebook this year, or if you’re not running them the right way, you are going to be leaving money on the table.
I manage Facebook ads for many clients from various industries, and across the board video ads are KILLING IT for everyone. As I build my monthly recaps for each client, I feel like I could almost copy and paste the same bullet point: “Video ads driving significant results”. Like 2-6x more results.
Why video ads?
- They’re attention-grabbing
- They can be easy to make
- There are more video ad placements available than ever before
- You can retarget video viewers, which is especially valuable right now when site visitor retargeting is harder to do than ever with new IOS privacy updates
How to do Facebook video ads the right way:
1. Use Facebook Templates – if you don’t have video assets already, you can start by making your own videos right in Facebook Ads Manager. Click ‘Create Video’ in the media section of your ad, then use your best image or a handful of images and see which templates work best for your imagery and messaging. Some of my favorites at the moment are “Spotlight An Image”, “Slide” and “Swipe”.

2. Test Video Edits – Facebook has so many ways you can edit your video within Ads Manager, and although it takes some extra time, it pays off to add some of the “Edit Video” features. For example, test adding captions, your logo, text overlays, and trimming existing videos down to 15 seconds or less. I recently had a client that was having great success with their video ads, performing 2-3x better than image ads on average. I then tested out some edited versions of the existing videos – adding captions, trimming down to 15s, adding text, etc. and we quickly saw these video ads outperforming image ads by 6x more traffic!
3. Retarget Video Viewers – Not only do video ads attract more attention and clicks, they also help you build retargeting audiences quickly. Someone who watched all or most of your video is interested in your brand. They may not have been ready to click at the moment as they’re scrolling through social media, but if you can get in front of them again, you can help push them further down the funnel.
